Coastal Resources Management (CRM)

Strengthening the management of marine protected areas (MPA) and establishing environmental user fee systems (EUF) as a mechanism to sustain said management

  • Conducted discussions with all stakeholders throughout entire process of setting up MPA & EUF; explored various options, models, and approaches in collecting fees and managing funds from EUF
  • Assisted local government units (LGU's) in drafting and finalizing municipal ordinances covering MPA & EUF in area
  • Assisted LGU's in working out other regulations related to resource management
  • Assisted people's organizations in capacity building for organization, training for EUF enforcement, and studying ecotourism possibilities
  • Conducted information-education-communication (IEC) activities regarding sustainable financing mechanism for LGU's and strategies in managing municipal waters
  • Strengthened partnerships with other civic groups involved in resource management assistance in areas

Solid Waste Management (SWM)

Setting up systems for garbage segregation at source, segregated transportation, storage, transfer, processing, treatment, and proper disposal to prevent pollution of marine ecosystems

  • Conducted Basic SWM Workshops and Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) Training for every level of stakeholders
  • Helped draft 10-year SWM plans on municipal level
  • Set up SWM systems in all sites
  • Provided technical assistance to LGU's to establish sanitary landfills and improve management of disposal sites
  • Discussed with stakeholders implications of RA 9003 Ecological SWM Act and the roles of the municipal SWM board and barangays
  • Conducted capacity-building activities with people's organizations and technical assistance to LGU's for various site-specific SWM initiatives
  • Assisted in setting up Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF's) with composting and recyclables collection and marketing features

Sewage Management And Sanitation (SMS)

Managing collection, disposal, and/or treatment of wastewater, solid waste, and hazardous waste for the protection of human health and environment

  • Assessed existing systems and consulted stakeholders to develop sanitation plans with overwhelming demand for on-site sanitation systems in most of the communities
  • Facilitated meetings between stakeholders and local/foreign wastewater management companies to discuss design, construction, operation, and sanitation interventions
  • Facilitated cross visits between communities needing intervention and communities already equipped with low-cost and innovative SMS technology
  • Conducted IEC activities to introduce dry or waterless Ecosan toilets
  • Provided technical assistance for specific requirements like septage management, dry sanitation, sewage collection and treatment systems, upgrading/retrofitting of facilities
  • Initiated handwashing and hygiene education campaigns in the communities
  • Adapted innovative sanitation strategies to develop low-cost urinals and handwashing taps

Cleaner Production (CP)

Applying integrated environmental strategy to increase efficiency, minimize waste, and prevent pollution, formulated after studying human activity aspects and their corresponding impacts on environment and human health

  • Conducted CP training by modules among resort, dive shop, and restaurant operators
  • Engaged one establishment per site as model to demonstrate capability building from modules, audit of facility through CP assessment, and implementation of developed CP recommendations
  • Conducted CP assessment of volunteer establishments to help reduce environmental impacts of its operations
